Ahead of NDA-II’s maiden Union Budget to be presented Saturday, Orissa POST caught up with people from a medley of professions who shared their expectations
More emphasis should be given to development of infrastructure and communication because they can provide employment to our youths and will bridge the gap between urban and rural population. The Centre also needs to take strong steps to control inflation and corruption which have become a serious concern for middle class families. Industrial development is also essential, but that should not be at the cost of environment and forests.

The main aim of the Centre while presenting the Union Budget in Parliament should be to create physical infrastructure in the country. Infrastructure only creates more opportunities for people. Moreover, people should also not shy away from paying their taxes. In fact, people should feel proud to pay taxes because in this way they can contribute to
nation-building.

The art and culture department needs to be developed. We lack many things. I would expect this general budget to introduce more schemes and allocate more funds for the development of the department. There is no contemporary art museum in India while other countries do lots of things in this regard. Rural and tribal artists, especially folk artists are far behind. We need new schemes for their development on a long term basis.

I hope this year’s general budget will suit everyone. Everything is already expensive. As a consumer I anticipate no hike in the prices of goods and other daily used products. In every budget, the government announces new schemes for the underprivileged and tribal region, I think inaccessible areas should be given more preference this time around.

Budget should not be made in the favour of industrialists. There are three special sectors where money should be invested like education, police and health. Manpower in police department should be increased so that crime can be kept under control in the state.

The budget should be favorable to the common man. Most important, facilities like housing to common citizens should be provided and tax on essential commodities like food and medicine should be reduced.
