Cuttack, June 26: Many low-lying areas here witnessed extensive water logging after rain lashed the silver city for two hours Sunday.
All the streets and roads at Pattapola, Diwanbazar, Mehendi Pir, Kazi Bazar, Behera Sahi, Chandi Square, Khatbin Sahi, Muhhamadia Bazar, Mahi Das Bazar, New LIC Colony, Arunodaya Market, Jobra, Alisha Bazar, Mangalabagh, Ranihaat, Rajbagicha, Haripur, Shankrapur, Khannagar, Choudhury Bazar, Meria Bazar, Mahanadi Vihar, Chauliaganj, Badambadi and Aparnanagar area were inundated with rainwater.
Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) commissioner Gyana Das and other officials visited the low-lying areas and supervised the release of rainwater. As many as 35 water pumps were pressed into service to release the rainwater, CMC sources said.
Residents, meanwhile, blamed the callousness of CMC officials for the water logging. “Almost all localities of the city face water logging during heavy rain every year. CMC authorities are yet to take the issue seriously and devise a strategy to tackle the situation,” said Cuttack Mahanagar Shanti Committee executive president Bijay Kumar Das.
A few corporators have alleged that the civic body did not complete the drain repairing and desilting work in time. “We have engaged heavy water pumps to release rainwater,” Gyana Das said.
