Angul: A doctor sustained serious injuries on his head after a policeman beat him up during a helmet check session here in Angul town Sunday morning.
The victim was identified as Dr Kamalakant Jena. Sources said, Jena was stopped by a cop at Angul police station square while he was on his way to hospital on a motorbike. Before, Jena could reveal anything, the cop allegedly beat him up with a lathi for not wearing helmet. The injured doctor was rescued and taken to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) where he is posted currently.
After getting an emergency phone call, Jena was in hurry to attend a serious patient at the district headquarters hospital and forgot his helmet. Even, as he tried to reveal the matter to the cop, the latter attacked him, sources said. Another doctor near the hospital rescued him from the police.
The incident spread outrage in the area as locals accused the cops of taking law in their hands. If a doctor is assaulted in full public, think of the situation of a normal citizen, a local complained. Locals accused the cops of taking to illegal means just to extract money from commuters.
“I admit that I had committed mistake for not wearing helmet while riding the vehicle on the road. But, it does not mean that the cop will assault and hurt physically,” said the injured doctor.
“When I was stopped on the road during helmet check, I went to the cops and paid Rs 100 as fine for not wearing helmet. However, the cop talked roughly with slur words. He snatched my gold chain from neck and started beating me with stick without mercy,” Dr Jena alleged.
He said that he will file an FIR demanding strong action against the police, who assaulted him on the pretext of duty.
