Bhubaneswar: Orissa youngster Asish Sinha had a double whammy at the National Super Series Tennis in Raipur as he emerged champions in both the U-16 boys’ singles and doubles events.
Asish survived a three-set scare against his doubles partner Udayveer Singh of Chandigarh in the singles’ final. He registered a hard-fought 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 win against Udayveer. Earlier, the Orissa lad eked out a 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-1 win in a keenly contested semifinal against P Hitesh of Tamil Nadu.
Asish then partnering Udayveer, outplayed the pair of Rudra Kapoor and Arun Venkat Guruswamy 6-0, 6-0 in the final of the doubles event. Asish is a trainee at the Farhan Ali Tennis Academy here.
However, star player Ameek Kiran Batth was unfortunate as she lost her U-16 girls’ singles battle to Dharna Muddully in the semifinals in a close three-setter.
Aniket, Minal shine
Aniket Tripathy (3/10) and Minal Parida (3/34) wreaked havoc as Paramount Sporting bundled out Town Club for 92 in their first innings in the second day of their two-day cricket match at the Town Club Ground here, Friday.
Resuming at six for no loss, in reply to Paramount’s 192, the hosts suffered a dramatic collapse as the visitors bagged three points following their first innings lead of 100 runs. Subhasish Khandayatray (38) and Pratyush Das (30) were the only batsmen to offer some resistance for the hosts.
The match was declared as draw at the end of concluding day’s play. At stumps, Paramount were 85 for four with Gaurav Gouda (51) scoring half century.
