Bargarh, May 23: Four persons died and eight others were seriously injured when the jeep they were aboard hit a tree near Balijuri on the Bargarh-Borigumma national highway in the wee hours, police said Saturday.
The mishap occurred when 12 persons from Chiplima in adjoining Sambalpur district were returning home after witnessing ‘‘Shitalasashti’’ festival at Barpali in Bargarh district, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) NC Dandasena said.
Three occupants of the jeep died on the spot while another succumbed to serious injuries at a hospital. All the injured were being treated at the VSS Medical College Hospital at Burla, he said.
The deceased were identified as Subal Meher (24) Mitu Meher (23), Tilu Pradhan (26) and Saroj Buda (23) of Chipilima in Sambalpur. A pall of gloom descended on Old Market Colony in Chipilima when the bodies were cremated in the area Saturday.
