Bhubaneswar: Orissa Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Kiran Manisha Mohanty was in sole second position after the end of the eighth round of the All India LIC Chess Championships for Women here, Saturday.
Kiran defeated Arti Kapoor of North Zone in the penultimate round of the nine-round meet. The state star has seven points in her kitty and she will face Radhika Devi Chavali of South-Central Zone in the final round, Sunday.
WGM Swati Ghate of West Zone is on top with 7.5 points after getting the better of Radhika while WGM K Bindu Saritha of South Zone is sole third with six points in her kitty. She defeated Anagha Yardi of West Zone.
Yogesh shines
A Yogesh clinched gold medals in the men’s 400m and 110m hurdles events in the All India LIC Sports meet at the Kalinga Stadium here, Saturday.
DL Zodge and J Kumar claimed silver and bronze medals respectively in the 400m. J Mahendra Rao won the silver medal in the 110m hurdles event.
Among other winners on the day, Kalidas Hirave secured the gold in the men’s 10,000m while Sandeep Kumar and P Rajeesh bagged the silver and bronze medals respectively. In the men’s javelin throw, Sunil Goswami, Shamith D Suvarna and Dipu Vargesh finished first, second and third respectively.
Monika Athare picked up her fourth gold of the meet by winning the women’s 400m. Anju and M Gurnule finished second and third respectively. Shahejahani, Gurmeet Kaur and Ambey Yadav bagged the gold, silver and bronze medals in women’s javelin throw respectively. T Renuka topped the women’s 100m hurdles event.
