Purushottampur: A lecturer of Taratarini College here in Ganjam district was arrested Monday on charges of stalking and sending lewd messages to a girl student through social media. The accused was identified as Janardhan Sahu, head of the chemistry department in the college.
A case was registered and Sahu was produced in court. He was later remanded in judicial custody after the court rejected his bail plea. The girl was produced before the magistrate who recorded her statement.
The matter came to light after the girl narrated her ordeal to her father who lodged a written complaint in this connection.
According to the complainant, the girl, a student of Plus III 2nd year, was attending Sahu’s tuition classes for the last two years. Since then, Sahu was reportedly smitten by the girl and began harassing her.
After coming to know of the lecturer’s alleged advances, the girl’s family members reportedly warned Sahu to mend his ways and stopped sending the girl to his classes. However, Sahu reportedly tried to woo the girl several times and was even beaten up by the girl’s family members on some occasions, sources said. Later, he began sending messages to the girl through social media.
The infuriated family members then intercepted him in the local market and beat him up before handing him over to police. Sahu is married and has a son and daughter. When asked for his comment, Sahu refused to speak on the matter. PNN
