Kendrapara: A 12-year-old girl of Biraswati village under this police limits Monday committed suicide after her father expressed his inability to buy her a dress on the occasion of Raja Festival, according to the police.
The deceased was identified as Priyambada Swain, a Class VII student and daughter of Prafulla Swain of the village.
Priyambada demanded new clothing and some stationery items before her father ahead of the festival. However, the poor father couldn’t afford them due to his poor financial condition. Upset over matter, the girl ended life by hanging from the ceiling fan using her scarf when the other family members were absent at home.
Her mother spotted the incident and managed to rush her to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) with the help of neighbours but the doctor pronounced her dead.
Meanwhile, the villagers expressed resentment after the hospital authorities demanded money from poor Prafulla, who failed to afford a dress for his daughter, for post-mortem.
When contacted, CDMO Baishnab Charan Sahoo said he would conduct a probe into the alleged collection of money for the post-mortem which is done free of cost at the DHH.
The Sadar police registered a case of unnatural death in the matter.
