Ganjam/Berhampur: Ganjam police nabbed a notorious criminal in a joint operation with the Rambha and Khurda police late Monday night.
The accused, Gadadhar Swain, is a history-sheeter. He was arrested after Swain fell from his bike when the police team fired at him at Dalkhai in the ODRP Colony near Balibagad, Rambha police IIC Namita Nayak said.
Swain was first admitted to the Chhatrapur community health centre and was later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, she said. A Mauser pistol and three bullets were seized from him.
Swain has several cases of dacoity and theft against him in various police stations in Ganjam and Khurda districts. He is accused of demanding money from a contractor in Banpur and had shot at him September 10. Later, he went absconding and was untraced, Namita said.
His growing stature in the world of crime became a headache for the police and Rambha and Khurda police prepared a blueprint to nab him. The police team was looking for him when they received an intelligence report about Swain’s presence in Rambha.
The police team raided the area and was preparing to seal both ends of the Parikuda road to nab him when Swain passed by on a motorbike with an accomplice.
Police tried to catch him but he fired and tried to escape. Swain fell from his bike when a bullet fired by the police hit his right knee. His accomplice managed to escape. PNN
