If your wardrobe is stuffed with old silk saris you don’t want to get rid of, try reusing them in clever ways
Most of our wardrobes are stuffed with old silk saris we don’t want to dispose of as they are too precious and convey cherished memories. There are a number of elegant ways to re-use the timeless fabric we simply can’t bring ourselves to discard.
Awesome in anarkalis
Anarkalis are a timeless fashion. There is no better way of zeroing in on a graceful attire than the anarkali. Check out for a good design on the web and pick a good tailor. You can transform the saris into flowy or floor-kissing anarkalis. Flaunt the shiny and resplendent outfit to parties or on festive occasions.
Contemporary kurtis
If you are averse to anarkalis, make fashionable kurtis out of the saris lying unused. Transform the dazzling Kanjeevarams into grand, festive kurtis. Other plain saris can be used for simpler kurtis.
Sari dresses
Gorgeous dresses made of Kanjeevaram, Chanderi or Banarasi silk are the latest fad. They are timeless in appeal. You can make a formal dress or cocktail one out of these saris. Be creative while making the dress. Ask your tailor to add a fabric here and there as per the design and ensure that the final product looks contemporary.
Charming lehengas
Converting your sari into a lehenga has been the easiest way to keep the sari’s charm intact. Use the leftover cloth to make a suitable blouse to match your lehenga.
Ethnic flowy skirts
Long flowy skirts with matched tops look graceful on both skinny and healthy bodies. If you choose to look a bit modern, give short skirts a try. But making long skirts is the easiest way to revive old saris and retain their grace. You can also use the remaining fabric in a creative way to get a top to suit the skirt.
Ethnic pants
Give your creativity a free rein by making stylish pants which go well with charming tops. You can even make fashionable palazzos out of saris with thick borders.
Traditional overcoats
Sleeveless overcoats over kurtis is so in. Make a gorgeous jacket for yourself out an old sari. It is difficult to get a good jacket separately to match your kurti but you can make them out of your old saris. The more gorgeous they are, the better they look on plain kurtis.
Dupattas and scarves
You can make dupattas and scarves out of your old saris even if they are damaged and not in good shape by being a little innovative. Use heavy saris like Kanjeevarams to make dupattas. Scarves can be made out of saris with lighter fabrics.
Bags and gift wrappers
Make small and shiny bags and pouches out of old silk saris. Stick a kundan and stones to make them look charming. You can also make precious gift wrappers out of old silk, while getting rid of polythene wrappers which are not eco-friendly.
