Cuttack, August 18: The Orissa High Court Friday granted conditional bail to Seashore CMD Prashant Das who was arrested for his alleged complicity in the multi-crore rupee Seashore chit fund scam in the state in 2013.
Justice CR Das has granted the bail upon conditions that Das has to furnish two sureties and surrender his passport with a lower court. Besides, Das will take permission from the concerned authorities if and when he goes outside the state.
He would cooperate with the investigating officer and would not provoke any witness of the case, the court ruled.
Das’ counsel Suresh Tripathy, a Supreme Court lawyer, argued that his client has been languishing in jail for the past four years. CBI has charge-sheeted Das and investing agencies have also attached his movable and immovable assets under the Odisha Protection of Interests of Depositors (OPID) Act. Hence there shouldn’t be any constraint in granting him bail, Tripathy contented the court.
According to sources, the Crime Branch (CB) had arrested Das from Mumbai June 19, 2013 for his alleged complicity in the multi-crore Seashore chit fund scam. Following the directive of the Supreme Court, CBI had taken over the investigation from CB.
