1 dead, 2 critical in landslide

Malkangiri, Jan 10: A 22-year-old woman was killed after a huge chunk of earth caved in on her while she along with her coworkers was waiting inside a burrow to load soil on a tractor at Toimetala village under Kalimela block in the district.

The deceased was identified as Ramabati Taram of Bhekata Palam village. Two of her coworkers – Laxmi Taram and Rina Taram were critically injured and were being treated at the district headquarters hospital here.

According to sources, Ramabati along with six of her coworkers had gone to a jungle to load soil on a tractor Sunday. After loading the tractor, the labourers were taking rest in the burrow where soil was being dug when a huge mass of earth caved in on them. Ramabati was covered by soil while other labourers managed to run away from the spot. Two of them got injured as they were hit by soil chunks.

When the landslide stopped, the labourers managed to bring out Ramabati from under the heap of soil. But by that time she had breathed her last.

On being informed, villagers reached the spot and rushed the injured to Kalimela community health centre. Later, they were shifted to the district headquarters hospital here as their condition turned critical.

Police registered an unnatural death case and sent the body for postmortem.
