Boudh: A candidate died of suspected cardiac arrest while two others fell unconscious during a physical test for constable recruitment by the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) at its fifth camp near Murshundi in this district Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Prabasi Nayak (22) from Sorada village under Nuagaon police limits in Nayagarh district. The other two critically ill were Prabhat Kumar Sahu (23) of Karadi village under Harbhanga police limits in Boudh district and Kuna Nayak (22) of Geleikuntuni village under Parajang police limits in Dhenkanal district.
The trio had taken part in the 5 km run as part of a fitness test. However, half-way through the race, they collapsed before reaching the target point. They were rescued and admitted to Boudh district headquarters hospital where Prabasi Nayak died. Police said, Kuna and Prabhat are out of danger. Boudh SP Sudhanshu Shekhar Mishra, SDPO Salestin Tiga and IIC Subash Chandra Raiguru visited the DHH and took stock of the situation. Later, an autopsy was conducted in the presence of a magistrate.
The number of casualties during constable recruitment is rising in the state. Two youths had met a similar fate August 9 and August 11. On August 9, Ramesh Pradhan, 19, of Nukhapada village under Narsinghpur block of Cuttack district died in a similar manner. Similarly, Susant Nayak, a resident of Dharabhata under Biswanathpur police limits in Kalahandi district, died during a physical test for OSAP constables at Bhawanipatna August 11. The deaths have received huge flak from all quarters as many candidates were reportedly hospitalised after they collapsed during physical endurance tests.
