Sambalpur: Keeping the amount of water flow and safety of the Hirakud dam in view, seven more sluice gates of the facility were opened Monday. As three sluice gates were opened Sunday, water is now being released through 10 gates – -seven on the left spillway and three on the right spillway.
While the flow of water was estimated at 160, 666 cft, an equal volume of water was released through these 10 gates. Sources said the water released through Burla power channel, Bargarh canal, Sasan canal and Sambalpur canal per second was 21,246cft, 3, 432cft, 250cft and 61cft respectively. Rainfall upstream of the dam was recorded at 14.06mm, while 6.64mm rainfall was recorded downstream by 6pm Monday.
Hirakud Dam chief engineer Harman Pradhan said the water would reach Munduli in 72 hours after release. Though Pradhan said that the released water is unlikely to cause flooding, a flood alert has been sounded.

Bhubaneswar: With the water level in Baitarani River crossing the danger mark, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik asked district administrations of Bhadrak, Jajpur and Keonjhar to remain in full preparedness to effectively deal with the situation.
The office of Special Relief Commissioner said the water level has crossed the danger level at Akhuapada Monday evening due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment of the river and it was flowing at 18.10metres against danger level of 17.83metres with a rising trend.
SRC officials said they have deployed one team of ODRAF from Cuttack to Jajpur district, two teams from Cuttack and Rourkela to Keonjhar and one team from Balasore to Bhadrak to assist the district administration in rescue and relief operations.
