Puri: More than 10 lakh pilgrims and devotees thronged Bada Danda to witness the annual Rath Yatra, there are some volunteers who were seen eagerly serving those falling sick during chariot pulling.
Strong believer of the adage ‘Service to mankind is service to God’, these volunteers were seen distributing glucose water, biscuits and food packets to the devotees who were exhausted at the Grand Road are there since morning. Besides, some were seen taking care of the tired pilgrims.
Some of these good samaritans were also seen carrying first-aid boxes and medicines. In case of any mishap, they would provide immediate attention. This apart, stretchers are also kept ready to shift any grievous injured pilgrims to the nearest hospital.
As the fear of stampede, suffocation and violence cannot be ruled out at a place like this where lakhs throng to witness the festival, the role of the volunteers is highly commendable, “said a devotee.
Over 1000 volunteers from various organisations including cadets of Scouts and Guide and NCC, Bharat Sevashram Sangh, Kishwar Sevashram and Ishwar Sevashram have been pressed into service; sources said adding they will stay in Puri till the return journey of the deities.
