Bhubaneswar: A total of 1,832 people have lost their lives due to drowning in rivers and sea over the past three years, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the Assembly Monday.
Responding to a question raised by BJD member Bibhuti Bhusan Balabantaray, the CM said 1,750 deaths occurred in rivers, while 82 people drowned in the sea during the period.
Majhi stated that Cuttack district recorded the highest number of river drowning deaths (179) between 2022 and 2024 (up to the present date).
This was followed by Keonjhar (160), Mayurbhanj (154), Sundargarh (140), Kendrapara (110) and Sambalpur (107).

Boudh district recorded the lowest number of river drowning cases, with only nine deaths reported during the same period.
In cases of sea drowning, Puri district reported the highest toll with 62 deaths, followed by Ganjam (13), Jagatsinghpur (six) and Balasore (one).
