As many as 11 places recorded mercury above 40 degree with Bhawanipatna remaining hottest at 45.5 degree Celsius Friday followed by Sonepur at 45.4, Balangir and Titilagarh at 45 degree Celsius each. Sambalpur recorded 44.8 degree Celsius, Hirakud, 44.6, Jharsuguda, 43.6, Angul, 42.7 and Sundargarh, 42.5 degree Celsius.
As a respite for people, the Meteorological centre here stated that the ongoing heatwave will be over in the next 24 hours. The Met has also predicted the southwest monsoon to enter the state around June 7 while pre-monsoon rain may lash parts of the state between June 2 and June 4.
“There is a likely system over the Arabian Sea that could push the southwest current to flow into Kerala coast, but it might hit the southern state by May 31. If the flow of the wind is not curtailed by any system, the southwest monsoon could enter the state around June 7,” said Met director Sarat Sahu.
