Polsara: Police Wednesday arrested two persons in connection with the murder of a woman after she protested against eve-teasing of her daughter at Bhabarada village under this police limits in Ganjam district Sunday. The deceased was identified as Kamala Swain (45), wife of Prakash Swain.
A special police team was formed to arrest the accused. Acting on a tip-off, police raided Belpunji outskirts and arrested the duo. They were identified as Manoj Nahak and Narayan Nahak. The accused were making a bid to fly outside the state, IIC Tapaswini Kanhar said. Police had arrested another accused Akshay Sahoo Tuesday.
A police platoon was deployed in the village to maintain law and order. According to police, four accused reportedly passed lewd comments on one of the deceased’s daughters who attended a private school near the village.
Family members lodged a written complaint against the accused but in vain. We had even met the SP but the police did not take action against the accused, Prakash alleged.
On the fateful day, Manoj, Akshay and Narayan with iron rods and mausars stormed into Prakash’s house and assaulted Kamala. Meanwhile, Prakash fearing for life climbed on a tree while his daughters hid near a water pump. The trio stabbed Kamala and hit her with iron rods right before Prakash’s eyes and fled.
Prakash got down the tree and rushed Kamala to Polasara community health centre (CHC). However, she died while undergoing treatment. Tension prevailed as the news of Kamala’s death spread in the village.
Irate over the incident, locals placed the body on Polasara main road and staged a demonstration. Accusing the police responsible for not taking steps against the accused, the mob ransacked the local police station and set vehicles on fire, motorcycles and cycles kept inside the police station premises.
Later, police were deployed in the village to bring the situation under control. The body was seized and sent for post-mortem. The murder was the fallout of a political conspiracy, Prakash alleged. Kamala reportedly was an active BJD party worker, Prakash added. Meanwhile, Prakash and his daughters were under the fear of being attacked and demanded police protection. PNN
