2 women die as ambulance fails to reach village

Nuagaon: Two women rescued from a pond in critical condition died after an ambulance failed to reach their village due to bad road condition in Gundurisahi of Jakeda panchayat here in Nayagarh district Saturday.

The deceased were Sushama Jani (30), wife of Janardan Jani, and Basanti Jani (55). The incident occurred when Basanti was bathing in the village pond.

A pall of gloom descended in the village with the locals mourning the untimely death of the women. Nuagaon is a tribal block where people still live without basic facilities.

Sushama had come to the pond with her two kids when she saw Basanti drowning and rushed into the pond holding her four-year-old son in her arms.

But she failed in her attempt and both slipped into the water. Sushama’s five-year-old son who had not entered the pond shouted for help. Villager Sansari Jani rushed to the spot and first rescued the kid, and later the two women with the help of fellow villagers.

They desperately tried to call an ambulance and some other vehicles, but none of them could reach the village due to bad road. The two women later died as no medical help came their way.

The villagers said the women could have been saved had they been taken to a hospital in time.

The sufferings of the villagers did not end with the death of the women. The villagers had to carry the bodies for some distance before they could hire a vehicle and reach the district headquarters hospital in Nayagarh for post-mortem.
