Malkangiri, Sept 5: Three hardcoreMaoists, including two who carried `1 lakh bounty each on their heads, Saturday surrendered before police here. The three rebels, who were active in Padia Naxal Dalam in the district since 2010, surrendered along with a huge quantity of material like cartridges and substances used in landmine making, superintendent of police Mitrabhanu Mohapatra told reporters. The trio – Muka Kunjami (35) of Silakota village, Mukunda Sodi (30) and Budra Kunjami (32) of Perubai village of Chitrangapali panchayat – were involved in several offences including murder, blasting of government buildings and ambush, the SP said.According to police, Muka had joined as a party member of Andhra-Orissa Border (AOB) special zonal committee in 2010. He was involved in Pandu Madkami murder of Parsanpali village October 26, 2012, Janiguda ambush of February 10, 2012, Padia block bombing of December 24, 2013 and blasting at Materu panchayat.
Similarly, Mukund also worked as a member of AOB zonal committee and was involved in the killing of B Ramchandra, a constable at Padia Bazaar May 16, 2010, Karami Yogi of Metaguda January 13, 2013, Soumendra Betta of Jhiliguda October 25, 2013 and murder of Jaga Sodi and Aga Kabasi of Keriaguda January 4, 2015. Besides, he was involved in bombings in Padia block, Materu panchayat and an ambush at Dharampali,.
Bundra Padia was also involved in most of these cases apart from the blasting at Kalimela Kanyashram bridge in 2013. The material handed over to the police included – 80 live bullets, 12 gelatin strips, four Maoist uniform, a video player, three torch lights, five soap case bombs, three packets of wire, Maoist literature, CDs and welding material
The state government had announced a reward of `1 lakh each on the heads of Muka and Mukunda, the SP said. The three said they decided to give up arms and return to the mainstream as they were disillusioned with the activities of Maoists and realised that the rebels were torturing the poor and tribals. The ultras also killed innocent people by falsely branding them as police informers, besides torturing tribal girls and women, said the surrendered Maoists.
Mukunda, one of the surrendered ultras said the rebels had forcibly picked him up when he was in Class VII of Bapanpali School, saying there was no need to pursue education. They inducted him into the Maoist cadres promising two square meals a day, Mukunda added.
The surrendered cadres would be provided all benefits available under the government’s rehabilitation policy, the SP said.
It may be noted that 12 Maoists have already surrendered in the district in last one month.
