Balasore: Railway police busted an inter-state tortoise smuggling racket here Sunday. Police arrested three persons who were smuggling the reptile species to Kolkata and seized the contraband. The seized tortoises were handed over to the forest department.
Chandipur ranger Debendra Patra has registered a case against the accused and produced them in court. The arrested were Uttam Mandal (19), Ashok Mandal (27), both from West Bengal, and Anadi Samal (24). The three had purchased tortoises from Sakshigopal area in Puri.
The reptiles, packed in bags, were being supplied to Kolkata on a train.
