Ganjam: Police Friday arrested four persons while two others were detained for interrogation in connection with the gangrape of a girl at Malad village under Ganjam police limits.
The victim had lodged a complaint against six persons with Ganjam police Wednesday night.
While R Trilochan, D Buleya, R Chittaranjan and R Keshab were arrested, D Chabi and K Bhim were detained. All of them are from Malad village, police said.
“The arrested persons were sent for medical examination to MKCG Medical College and Hospital and subsequently produced in a court,” IIC Ramakant Mahalik said.
“Doctor examining the health condition of the victim confirmed gangrape,” sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Ramesh Chandra Sethy said at a press meet.
Irate over the incident, hundreds of locals gheraoed the police station demanding claiming the accusations false.
Ganjam ASP AP Swain pacified the agitators assuring them of action against the accused.
A meeting was held with sarpanch T. Jayanti, village committee president R Dandapani, the SDPO and ASP.
Meanwhile, Orissa Nari Surakhya Mancha president Susmita Dash, Geetanjali Behera, Usha Nayar and Rashmita Sahu met the victim’s mother and inquired about the incident.
They also met the SP and SDPO and took stock of the situation.
According to sources, the incident occurred December 31 night when the villagers were partying while the girl was alone at her house.
Taking advantage of the situation, the four accused in inebriated state entered the girl’s house and took turns on her. Their two accomplices stood guard outside the house.
The girl’s mother brought the incident to the notice of the village committee but the youths claimed innocence. Left with no option, the girl lodged the police complaint. PNN
