Bhubaneswar, Dec 13: Hours after a man was robbed of cash and ATM card on a road at Rasulgarh, Mancheswar police Saturday arrested 11 people, four of them young women, on charges of loot.
Some of the arrested people hail from West Bengal, and their modus operandi involved the use of young women to lure unsuspecting men riding bikes or driving cars on the roads of the capital city, said police. Two cars, 12 mobile phones and cash of Rs 51,000 were recovered from the arrested miscreants, who had been living in the city for the last couple of months.
Police identified the miscreants as Sib Prasad Mohanty alias Babaji (35) of Choudwar, Sanjay Dalei (28) of Jagatsinghpur district, Sanjay Mallick alias Subha (21), Prasanta Kumar Sahoo alias Bapi (29) of Pipili, Abdul Qadir alias Kurra (32) of Chandbali, Rafiq-ul (39) of West Bengal, Md Shabaz Abdullah alias Zadu (26) of Jatni, Sania Dey (25) of West Bengal, Arpita Roy (25) of West Bengal, Sania Barik alias Tiki (20) of Niali and Piki Roy (23) of West Bengal.
Mancheswar police station inspector-in-charge Himanshu Bhusan Swain said the 11 miscreants were involved in the robbing of one Pradipta Pradhan of Kujang, Jagatsinghpur, at Rasulgarh December 11 evening.
“When Pradhan, who was coming from Patia in his car, reached Rasulgarh, two young women from the gang stopped him and asked him to give them a lift. While Pradhan and the two girls were talking, other associates of the girls came in a car and abducted him. They took Pradhan to a secluded place and looted cash of Rs 13,000 from him. They also took away his ATM card and withdrew Rs 40,000 from his account. The miscreants later threw Pradhan on the Puri-bypass road and fled,” added Swain.
“On receiving a complaint from Pradhan, we started the investigation and nabbed 11 persons in connection with the case,” added Swain.
A case was registered and the 11 miscreants were produced in a court Saturday.
