Berhampur: Parents of Som, a-four-year-old boy, are running from pillar to post to raise money to treat three holes in his heart. Like other parents, Rajesh Swain and his wife Rojina were happy when they had their third and youngest son. Sweets were distributed and the 21st day ceremony was observed. The newborn was named ‘Som’. Rajesh’s friends and relatives wished a bright future for him.
Rajesh, a driver, was trying hard to bring up his children. The couple hoped their difficulties would end once their children grow up and start earning. As days passed by, they noted that Som was not as active as other children. He did not move around much and was silent, and ate only a little food. The growth of his body did not match his age.
Finally, Rajesh and Rojina took him to Berhampur City Hospital. After many tests, what the doctors revealed left them in shock. On hearing that Som has three holes in his heart a chill ran down their spine.
They took Som to other hospitals including SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack and a private hospital in Bengaluru. The doctors at all hospitals prescribed surgery. Meanwhile, Som started complaining of breathing problems.
The couple has so far spent around Rs 3 lakh. For the operation they need lakhs. The couple is worried thinking about the money required for the surgery.
Some kind-hearted persons of their locality have started helping them. Radhakrushna Merchants’ Association President R Murali Mohan visited the couple Sunday and gave Rs 20,000 for their son’s treatment. Som’s surgery can be done only if more people like R Murali Mohan come forward.
