Birajakhetra: A local court sentenced a man to five years of imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 13,000 on him after convicting him over fatally attacking his wife over dowry demands Wednesday.
The assistant sessions-cum-fast track court judge Sushma Swain in Jajpur passed the order on Sukant Bal and directed him to serve an addition imprisonment of six months if he fails to pay the fine. The fine collected would be paid to his wife Sarojini Bal.
According to the case diary, Sukant of Thakuranipal village under Rajkanaika police limits in Kendrapara runs a garage in Chandikhole Bazaar. He married Sarojini of Nuagaon village under Dharmasala police limits at Biraja temple in Jajpur January 17, 2011.
Sarojini came to stay with her parents after Sukanta started torturing her for dowry despite the former expressing her father’s inability to meet his demand. Meanwhile Sukanta continued meeting Sarojini at his in-laws place and keep on insisting for dowry.
The incident occurred when Sukanta reached his in-laws place and brutally attacked his wife before dumping her into a well. Sukant even attacked his mother-in-law after she rushed to her daughter’s help.
Villagers rescued them and got them treated at local hospital. Sarojini after recovery lodged a complaint in the Dharmasala police station when Sukant after receiving bail order from the high court appeared before in the local court. Public prosecutor Sailendra Samal pleaded the matter on behalf of the state government.
