5th critical Covid-19 patient under ECMO support at Cuttack SCBMCH, succumbs

Cuttack: One critical Covid-19 patient who was under Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) support at the SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) here died Friday morning. So far five patients have succumbed to Covid-19 while under ECMO support. The deceased was the son of reputed doctor in SCBMH only.

The youth was shifted to the ECMO unit from the Covid-19 ward in critical condition after he developed severe lungs related complications September 24, the hospital’s emergency officer (EO) Bhubanananda Maharana informed.

Vital organs of the patient stopped functioning Thursday night. The deceased suffered a heart attack and breathed his last, the EO informed.

Currently one more patient is undergoing ECMO therapy at the SCBMCH. Four patients who were shifted from Bolangir, Kendrapara, Bhubaneswar and this city and put on ECMO support had breathed their last earlier.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had launched a dedicated ECMO facility at the SCBMCH August 27 to provide free treatment. Nine such machines were installed at that time.
