Bhograi, July 15: Villagers of Panipanda under this block of Balasore district have reportedly assaulted six policemen and damaged their vehicle while the latter were in the village to arrest a person, accused of killing his wife and two sons. Tension prevailed in the village while senior police officials are keeping a vigil on the situation.

According to reports, Jahira Bibi (daughter-in-law of Sheikh Kalu) and her two minor sons were found dead in their house under mysterious circumstances May 16, 2015. Sheikh Jalil, father of Jahira, had lodged a complaint with police alleging his daughter and her two sons were murdered in a pre-planned manner.

However, as the police had registered a case of unnatural death, the locals demanded a probe by Crime Branch into the incident and immediate arrest of Gafur (husband of Jahira) and his elder bother. Gafur had come to his house Tuesday night. The villagers surrounded the house, but Gafur managed to escape. The villagers then detained three women of the family in this regard. But when police reached the village, angry people snatched away their guns and lathis and thrashed them. They also deflated the wheels of the police vehicle.

Assistant sub-inspector Radhagobinda Madhual, five other policemen – Yudhistir Dey, Shiba Hansda, Srimant Hansda, Subash Marandi and Rabindra Das – were injured in the attack and admitted to Jaleswar hospital.
Additional superintendent of police Santosh Nayak visited the village and kept a watch on the unfolding situation. The police have registered a case against 15 villagers.
