Chhatrapur: More than 60 mechanised fishing boats and trawlers from Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada region, carrying over 400 fishermen, were stranded off Aryapalli coast in Ganjam district Tuesday as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal brought heavy rain and strong winds, making the sea turbulent.
Ganjam Collector V Keerthi Vasan said the fi shermen were unable to return to their native region due to the rough sea and took shelter at the Aryapalli fi shing jetty and Gopalpur port premises. The district administration provided necessary assistance to the fishermen and their vessels.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said adverse weather conditions are expected to persist at sea until the deep depression crosses the coast.
Additional Fisheries Officer Debidatta Mohanty said more boats were expected to arrive in the area. The administration was closely monitoring the situation and taking steps to ensure the safety of the fishermen and provide essential assistance.
