Nayagarh: A twelve-year-old Class VIII girl was allegedly raped by a 70-year-old man Friday. The incident was reported from Kaithagadia village under Nayagarh town police limits in this district.
The accused was Shyamsundar Swain, a neighbour to the victim. While the incident occurred Thursday, the matter came to the fore Friday after the victim’s father lodged a written complaint with the Nayagarh police. A case was registered and a probe has been launched.
According to the complainant, the victim was at home without going to school due to the heavy rainfall. The accused allegedly dragged her to his thatched house while she went to fetch water from a tube well. He held her captive inside his house and outraged her modesty. The girl screamed for help. Family members rushed to the spot and rescued the girl.
The matter was brought to the notice of the village committee. It ordered a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the victim’s family. The old man was handed over to police after he refused to pay the money. He will be produced in court after a medical examination, IIC Rashmiranjan Pattnaik said.
