96,000 affected in Jajpur flood

Jajpur: As many as 96,000 people in eight blocks of Jajpur district were affected by floods in river Brahmani as the water level flowed above the danger mark of the river Sunday.

The floodwaters entering the houses has affected 58,200 residents in Bari block alone for the second day Sunday after a 60-ft breach occurred at Banka Sahi under the block. According to reports available from the district emergency office over 96,675 people in 112 villages of 52 panchayats under eight blocks were hit by the floods. Two persons were drowned after being swept away in floodwaters.

All communications to Bari was disrupted after over 2-ft floodwater overflowed on Baruan- Bari road Sunday.  The floodwater of the river was found overflowing at 72.5-ft above the danger mark of 67-ft at Jenapur by 4 pm. 

The breach at Bankasahi has inundated several hectares of farmlands.  Villages like Kimbhiriapal, Baunsaria, Atira, Ramsa, Bari, Arangabad, Malda and Arual were cut-off from the rest of the world after floodwater s inundated their villages.

District emergency officer Rajalkashmi Nayak said the flood victims have been housed in six provisional shelters and being provided with cooked and dry foods while the ODRAF team has launched rescue operations. PNN
