G. Udayagiri: Police Saturday arrested a man on the charge of killing a neighbour woman and subsequently burning her body in a bid to erase evidence at Batingia Nedinaju under G. Udayagiri police limits in Kandhamal district.
The accused was identified as Amrutlal Nayak alias Butu (31). The police also seized a bloodstained trouser and a hammer from his possession.
According to police, deceased Hasina Pradhan lived alone as her husband worked in Tamil Nadu. Taking advantage of this, Butu strayed into her house December 20 night with evil intentions. He got infuriated after the woman spurned his advances and hit her with a hammer, killing her on the spot. Butu dragged the body to the kitchen where he set it on fire before fleeing.
He hid his blood-stained trouser and the hammer and was absconding since then. Preliminary investigation indicated Butu’s involvement in the crime after sniffer dogs entered his house.
In a huge relief to the victim’s family, police made the arrest 10 days after the crime. A case of murder was registered and Butu was produced in a court. He was remanded in judicial custody after the court rejected his bail plea.
The victim’s family members demanded stringent punishment for Butu. The accused is father of two children and had earlier served jail term in a criminal case. PNN
