Cuttack, Dec 6: The Orissa High Court has served a show-cause notice on the state government for not adhering to Supreme Court guidelines laid out on noise pollution.
The order came in response to a petition that alleged that the government has softened its stand and has done little to bring down noise pollution in the state.
A human rights activist of Konark, Nasim Ahmed Ansari, invoked the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules- 2000, 2010 and SC guidelines of 2005 on sound pollution, alleging that the government has failed to enforce the rules in the state.
Enforcement of bans such as those on bursting high decibel crackers and bursting crackers between 10 pm and 6am, as well as guidelines about displaying the details of a cracker’s chemical constituents on the packet, the volume of public address system are all being compromised, Ansari contended.
The human rights activist urged the High Court to take steps to ensure that the rules are strictly implemented.
On hearing the petition, Justice Biswanath Rath directed the state government and the state pollution control board (SPCB) to come up with an action taken report (ATR) in this regard within four weeks.
