Cuttack: A man was arrested after he allegedly beat to death a 56-year-old man at Maruti Mandap under Purighat police limits of the city Sunday.
Police nabbed Babua Pradhan (38), who hails from Patapur area in Ganjam district, for killing Pawan Bathual over a scuffle.
According to sources, Bathual, who hailed from Talasahi of Banpur in Khurda district, was staying at Choudhury Bazar area of the city and worked as a labourer. As usual he was asleep at Maruti Mandap Saturday night. His body was found in a pool of blood Sunday morning.
Upon being informed, the police with a scientific team rushed to the spot and launched a probe. Police discovered that the labourer was murdered over a past rivalry.
According to the police, Pradhan was also staying at Choudhury Bazar area where Bathual was staying. The duo had a picked a quarrel Friday night in an inebriated state. During the scuffle, Bathual had attacked Pradhan with a stick and injured him.
An angry Pradhan had threatened to kill him. When Bathual was in sleep Saturday night at the Maruti Mandap, Pradhan went there and repeatedly hit him with a bamboo stick on the head, leading to his death. The accused had hidden the bamboo stick in an auto-rickshaw, police said.
“The deceased’s sister-in-law Urmila Agarwal had lodged a complaint following which we arrested the accused. He will be produced in court Monday,” inspector-in-charge Tapas Kumar Pradhan said.
