Cuttack, Feb 8: Traffic jams are not new to Cuttack. In fact, the millennium city is fast earning a reputation for its dismal traffic management and motorists blatantly flouting regulations.
It is then no wonder that traffic snarls have become a regular affair at Bajrakabati Road, one of the busiest roads of the city that connects Ranihat to Badambadi.
Bajrakabati Road has two major crossings, allowing people from Kesharpur, Professorpada and Friends Colony to cross the road, thus severely affecting traffic.
The absence of speed-breakers at the crossings and multiple cuts along the divider is causing a lot of problems for both motorists and pedestrians alike in the area.
The area has several nursing homes, hundreds of shops, hotels, a fruit market and a large number of eateries. It is also the most commonly-used route by students to get to Ranihat High School, Ravenshaw University and other major schools and colleges of the city.
“Commuters and students who depend on this road face a lot of inconvenience due to the absence of speed-breakers on the road,” said Mahendra Moharana, a local.
“Speeding vehicles make it difficult for pedestrians to cross the road in the locality. There is an urgent need for speed-breakers,” said Sandeep Bhuyan, another local.
The road also acts as a connecting link for Dolomundai, Badambadi, Chhatra Bazaar, Ranihat and Mangalabag.
Lack of expansion of the existing roads is also affecting the smooth flow of traffic in the area.
According to sources, at least five to six minor accidents take place every day here.
Traffic cops are conspicuous by their absence, compounding the problem.
“We will take required steps to solve traffic problems. Proposals have been submitted regarding streamlining of the existing infrastructure needed for better traffic management in this important area of the city,” said PK Dalai, assistant commissioner of traffic, Cuttack.
