Bhubaneswar, Dec 6: The housing and urban development (H&UD) department, the parent body of urban local bodies, Saturday approved Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) proposal of collecting door-to-door garbage collection fee.
However, the BMC Regulation on User Charges (Amendment), 2014, will have to get the final approval of the law department before being implemented by BMC.
H&UD has also given its consent to levy administrative charges on people littering streets and piling up construction material on streets, which often puts additional burden on the corporation.
In a meeting chaired by H&UD secretary G Mathivathanan, the department has agreed to slap a fine of Rs 200 on those carelessly dumping garbage on streets and at public places. Those dumping construction material and demolition debris will have to cough up as much as Rs 3,000 for per tractor/truck trip.
The BMC council September 11 had unanimously approved the proposal to levy door-to-door garbage collection fee on residents. It subsequently sent the proposal to H&UD department for its mandatory nod.
If the new rule gets the final approval of the government, residents of EWS/LIG category houses and one BHK apartments will have to pay door-to-door garbage collection fee of Rs 50 per month. Those residing in MIG (two BHK) and HIG (three BHK) houses will have to shell out Rs 100 and Rs 200 per month, respectively.
Slum dwellers accommodated in Rajiv Awas Yojna (RAY) houses will have to pay Rs 50 per month to BMC.
For daily Haat markets, traders and vendors will have to pay user charges between Rs 100 and 500, depending on the area.
BMC spokesperson Srimant Mishra said the law department has to take a final call on the matter.
