Sundargarh: District judge Manas Ranjan Barik has directed a compensation of Rs 3lakh to a minor rape victim who delivered twins at the Sundargarh district headquarters hospital (DHH) a few days ago.
The payment of compensation was ordered in the presence of the Rourkela SP Umashankar Das and Sundargarh additional SP Rabinarayan Barik. The girl from Sadar area was raped and impregnated by a close minor relative on the promise of marriage. However, the minor and his family refused to marry the girl. The boy is absconding since then. After she was rescued by officials, the girl was sent to a Short Stay Home.
A few days back, she was admitted to Sundargarh district headquarters hospital and she delivered the twins. She was later referred to the Burla-based VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) as her condition worsened post the delivery. It is learnt that the condition of the twins and the victim are normal. They are now under observation by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).
The judge pronounced the compensation amount after examining the statements of the victim’s family and considering the need for financial assistance to take care of the babies.
“Further counselling will be done after she returns home in a healthy state. The twins will be given proper rehabilitation.” DCPO Sribant Jena said.
