Berhampur, Feb 10: Patients at the casualty ward of the MKCG Medical College and Hospital here, the premier referral hospital of south Orissa, have a harrowing experience while moving from one department to the other due to a shortage of stretchers.
According to reports, there are only two stretchers in the casualty ward as against the requirement of eight. In most of the cases, the attendants have no other option but to carry the patients. The situation becomes worse when four to five emergency patients visit the hospital at a time, sources said.
In the past, scuffles among patients’ attendants over acquiring a stretcher have been reported. Most often,
Class-IV employees, who are in charge of the stretchers, have to face the wrath of the patients’ attendants, the sources added.
When contacted, supervisor of the hospital Ashok Kumar Behera admitted that there is a shortage of stretchers in the hospital. Funds have been sanctioned to purchase more stretchers and tenders have been floated for the
purpose, Behera added.
