Bhubaneswar: Sleuths of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Thursday seized fake currency worth Rs 3 lakh from a traveller at Khurda Road Railway junction here.
The person, whose identity was not revealed by DRI, is a resident of Pahad Gav village in Sahebganj District of Jharkhand.
Following reliable inputs, the slueths intercepted the passenger travelling on the Kamakhya- Yeshvantpur AC express near the Khurda Road junction. The accused who was en route to Bengaluru had boarded the train from the Rampur Hat station in Malda district of West Bengal. The officials found 150 fake Indian currency notes of Rs 2000 denomination packed in two bundles in polythene carrier. The FICN bundles were concealed in an air bag.
During interrogation, he revealed that the fake currency notes were obtained by him from a person at Kaliachak in Malda district. The person had allegedly collected the fake notes from neighbouring Bangladesh.
According to the DRI officials, Kaliachak is infamous for circulation of fake currencies into India. He confessed before the sleuths that he had intended to exchange the fake currencies in Bengaluru by buying garments. He was also aiming to exchange them with small traders and businessmen in Bengaluru. DRI has started further investigations into the matter after arresting him.
