Malkangiri: Even as the government pumps in large amounts of funds to improve the standard of education in the state, the output continues to disappoint us in remote areas and this district is no exception.
Though students of 111 schools appeared for Class X final examination this year, not a single student passed in at least 10 schools of Malkangiri making it the worst performer in the state.
On being inquired by this correspondent about such poor performance by the students, it came to light that of the 111 schools, 61 upgraded high schools were opened during 2013-14 fiscal and they don’t have adequate number of teachers.
The repeated request by the students and their guardians to the administration in this regard didn’t help the cause. This has affected the performance of these schools, it was learnt.
The schools those failed to open their accounts in BSE examination were – Badadural UG high school in Khairaput block, the upgraded high schools at Darlabeda, Badapadar, Paparmetla, RAC-11 under Chitrakonda block, Temurupali UG high school under Mathili block, Marigeta UG high school under Kalimela block, Gudumpadar UG high school under Malkangiri block and a private school in Chalanguda.
The government opened the UG schools but failed to appoint the required number of teaching staff for the students. In many schools, the primary school teachers are seen taking classes of high school students, alleged many guardians, adding, the administration is playing with the future of the kids.
Admitting the poor performance of the schools, district education officer Manas Kumar Jena said the poor performance would be reviewed soon and measures would be taken to improve the pass rate.
According to government norms, there should be at least eight teachers including two trained Science graduates for Science and Mathematics, two trained Arts graduates, a sports teacher, a Hindi teacher and a Sanskrit teacher. However, most of the schools are being managed by just a Sanskrit teacher.
This has reflected in the poor performance of the schools, the guardians alleged. They sought immediate filling up of vacancies in the upgraded high schools to improve the standard of education in the district.
