Puri: In a joint operation, the District Drug Department and the Excise officials conducted surprise raids on medicines stores in the urban areas of this district Friday. Huge stock of fake medicines was seized from reputed medicine stores. The raiding teams, however, remained tight-lipped while the raid continued.
Acting on complaints of sale of spurious drugs and expired medicines, the raids were conducted as the sale of fake medicines is putting lives of many tourists, pilgrims and devotees from across the globe visiting the Holy City in stake.
Reports suggested that the raid teams have sealed many medicine stores, while the fake medicines sample have been sent for laboratory tests. It came to fore that the traders erase the expiry and manufacturing dates with spirits and update the dates illegally. Later, they sell it to people as fresh medicines.
Raids were also conducted in pharmacies and medicine shops in Sambalpur, Pipili and Mangalpur areas.
