Bhubaneswar: The state government plans to launch a special programme to prevent spread of HIV infections among the targeted community people who are living in closed areas like prisons and other such areas.
As per the plan, it will be launched here May 10 where special measures would be taken to prevent new infections and provide treatment to the people staying in prisons, Swadhar greh and Ujjwala centre.
State government officials, representatives from the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), Odisha State AIDS Control Society, NGOs, and National Health Mission are likely to take part in the launch. Community leaders are also slated to come to the capital for launching the special targeted programme.
Officials claim that as per the studies carried out by the United Nations (UN) Office on Drugs and Crime and the World Health Organisation, the prevalence of HIV and other blood borne viruses among people living in prisons and closed settings is higher than in the general population.
The spread of HIV in these closed settings has significant public health implications as almost all inmates return to their community thereby facilitating the spread of HIV infection to the general population.
