Bhubaneswar: Informing the media that there won’t be any scheduled power-cut this summer, Energy Minister Sushant Singh said as the current production and availability of power is enough to meet the requirement of state, no instruction has been forwarded for power-cut this summer.
“As the summer has one and half more months left to go, given the present availability of power we expect that there won’t be any shortage of power till June,” Singh said, adding, “During the peak hours, the average requirement is about 4,395 Mega Watt and we have that much to supply.”
Singh, however, clarified that power outages sometimes occur due to sudden increase in undeclared load, maintenance work, and system breakdown at certain places due to heavy wind and lightning.
To overcome this breakdown, he said, the government has taken several improvement works in the last two years. To check overload situations, power is supplied to places where there is shortage and equilibrium is maintained.
To ensure quality supply of power to consumers and overcome load shedding, he said the Energy department has decided to set up around 550 grid sub-stations out of which 178 have already been functional and the remaining will be installed in a phased manner shortly.
According to sources, the present power demand of the state during peak hours which was around 4,000 MW in April has shot up to over 4,300 MW. Officials said to meet this demand at peak hours, which will continue in the coming days till June, the Energy department is making all-out efforts to plug the demand-supply gap through power banking.
The state at present is producing 1,230 MW from six hydro stations, 780 MW from state thermal power stations, 1,212 MW from central sector, 245 MW from Independent Power Producers (IPPs), 40 MW from renewable energy sources and about 450 MW from other sources.
