Jajpur/ Jajpur Road: A man was killed while another was critically injured after a bear attacked them at Pataranga village under Korei police limits in Jajpur district Sunday.
Shyam Hensa died on the spot while Mukura Munda sustained critical injuries. Locals blocked National Highway-20 near Lakshmi Nagar demanding compensation for the kin of the deceased and financial assistance to the injured.
Vyasanagar tehsildar Sapan Kumar Nanda, forest ranger Debendra Patnaik and IIC Chinmayee Sahoo rushed to the spot. The villagers relented after forest officials announced Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia for the kin of the deceased and gave away Rs 40,000 for completion of his last rites.
According to reports, Shyam and Mukura were attacked by the animal when they had gone to attend nature’s call in the morning. Mukura was injured while trying to save Shyam. He is under treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital.
The forest officials launched a search for the animal. Later, a bear carcass was recovered from an abandoned house behind a forest bungalow at College Square in Jajpur Road in the evening.
However, forest officials didn’t say anything about the dead bear.
