Sambalpur, Feb 13: Jaundice has claimed one more life, taking the official toll in the district to 26. The death of Amos Naik (48) of Bhutapada here was confirmed by additional district medical officer (ADMO) Panchanan Nayak Friday.
According to sources, Naik was diagnosed with the diseased January 28. After his condition became critical, he was admitted to VSS Medical College and Hospital, Burla, February 6. He, however, died Wednesday while undergoing
treatment at the hospital.
Following his death, a team of officials from the health department conducted an inquiry. During investigation, officials detected hepatitis-e virus in his blood and confirmed his death due to jaundice, Nayak said.
Sources from the district health
department said five of the 27 persons, whose blood samples were tested at the district headquarters hospital here, were diagnosed with the disease. Out of the five persons, two persons belong to Bhatra and Daldalipada areas here, while one person hails from Singapali area under Dhanakauda block.
Two of the three jaundice-affected persons have been admitted to the
district headquarters hospital in
critical condition, sources said. Similarly, one each from Bangalipada and Gingirapada areas, who were undergoing treatment at separate nursing homes, have also been diagnosed with the disease, sources added.
With the addition of five new jaundice cases Friday, the number of persons
affected by the disease has reached 2,940, health department sources said.
