Jaleswar: Differently abled since childhood, 64-year-old Adyacharan Behera has surmounted his disability by dint of his grit and perseverance and established himself as a multi-faceted personality here in Balasore district.
He writes poems, stories and plays and directs them, does painting as well as carving on stone and wood.
Behera has amazing skills in playing the tabla and harmonium too. For his creative pursuits, he is lovingly known as Adya Sir. A teacher by profession, he has retired and been staying with his seven-member family at Ward-8 under Jaleswar municipality.
As an ideal teacher of the area, he has been honoured by various institutions. “With my creative pursuits, I spend my time peacefully,” Behera said.
What surprises his admirers is he has not learnt playing musical instruments from any teacher. “Patience, perseverance and sincerity are necessary to achieve success in these fields,” he stated.
Behera has been promoting art and music and encouraging students to learn and practise music and fine arts. Painting, however, holds special charm for him. According to locals, paintings that adorn walls of several schools in Jaleswar were drawn by Adya Sir.
Idols made out of mud and carved out of wood indicate his skills. He gets invitations from various places in Jaleswar and Balasore to make idols of Lord Jagannath, Lard Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.
Locals said Behera’s disability and financial shortcomings have not deterred him from giving wings to his creative talents. He has been an inspiration for many in the region.
