Bhubaneswar, February 25: The Philosophy department of the Rama Devi Women’s Autonomous College, Wednesday organised a seminar on the college premises of in order to create awareness among students on the importance of the subject in everyday life.
During the seminar, Ganesh Prasad Das, Professor in Philosophy from the varsity said, “Interest in Philosophy has been dwindling consistently owing to lack of consciousness among students; some people have some misconceptions regarding the subject due to inadequate knowledge all over the state.”
Das delivered a lecture on ‘Birth and Death of Philosophy’ in the seminar. Refuting common people’s misconception about the subject, he said that philosophy was not a difficult subject to handle; it was more interesting than most other subjects and students would love it if they had curiosity and knowledge of it.
Head of the Philosophy department RD College, Basant Kumar Das encouraged the students during seminar, explaining the career prospects that Philosophy offer. “Philosophy student can be a lecturer, in state colleges and universities or in institutions outside the state, with high pay. Public and private educational institutions are looking for students of Philosophy in various states. Therefore, without worrying, pay proper attention on the subject and success will be yours,” he said.
The students of RD College, were apparently much enthusiastic about the subject; many had already made plans to make their career in Philosophy. Some of the students were reportedly even encouraging their juniors so that they took up Philosophy seriously. Besides there were some students who were influenced by the last year’s seminars on ‘Philosophy Methods’, held in college and were more keen than others to take part in this year’s edition.
“I have been much inspired by the philosophy my father believed in. He was a student of Philosophy himself. Due to the way he inspired me, I decided to make Philosophy my honours paper,” said Monalisha Panda, a student.
Another student, Bandana Sahu said, “We are 100 students here in the Philosophy department and together we decided to hold a seminar to create popularity (of the subject) in our college. And we got a positive response; many students from other departments were seen enjoying the lecture of GP Das and B Kar.”
