Everyone wants to look pretty and graceful, but has it ever crossed your mind that you could get the ‘Little Mermaid’ look quite easily? Mermaid fashion is the ruling trend now at all evening galas, right from star-studded pageants to high-profile parties. When it comes to evening parties, gowns are dominating the Indian market now. A mermaid-shaped dress highlights curves and enhances the overall look. The best part is that this dress doesn’t have to be paired with accessories.
Mermaid dresses and gowns accentuate the body contours in a sleek manner to exude oomph and create a glamorous look. Bollywood actresses have been flaunting mermaid gowns with ease. As evening wear, they are elaborately and dramatically fashioned like a fishtail below the knees, yet they are body-hugging till the thighs. One may spot such outfits during weddings too as the mermaid cuts add a dash of glamorous allure to the entire ensemble.

Bhubaneswar based designer duo Roshan Kumar and Dinendra Pratap Singh Deo of Posh Affair Designer Lounge showcased mermaid cut gowns in their show ‘Nazaakat, which featured a host of celebrities as models including actors Jigyasa Singh and Prakruti Mishra. Nazaakat featured the Indo-Western and bridal collection of the duo.
Talking to Sunday POST, Roshan Kumar Sahoo said, “Mermaid dresses are fitted at the bodice, hip and thighs, while the skirt is designed to resemble a mermaid’s tapering tail in the silhouette. And the younger generation, which is fitness and health conscious, can well associate with mermaid cuts as it shows off their figure to advantage.”
The designer added, “The mermaid cut gown can be worn both for weddings and evening parties. It can be worn by anyone, all it requires is confidence. The reason for choosing this particular design for our collection is layers. The more layers a garment has, the more graceful a woman looks. Moreover, it makes a person look tall and sharp.”
Prakruti, who is playing the lead in Hindi serial BittiBusinesswali was the showstopper for Roshan’s collection. It was the second season of the fashion show conducted by Posh Affair. A fashion magazine and an e-commerce website were also launched on the occasion.
Be it a long evening gown or a prom dress that emphasises one’s curves, mermaid fashion spells femininity and glamour, said Roshan. The streamlined gowns closely follow one’s figure to mid-thigh or calf area and then flare out voluminously at the bottom. Those with refined taste looking to add a dash of glamour to their wardrobe could loosen their purse strings to purchase a range of mermaid apparel varying from strapless evening gowns, halter top formal outfits to long evening dresses.
