Rayagada: Following widespread media coverage, the district administration has taken steps to give good treatment to Mita Sabar, a 19-year-old orphan girl from Perupanga village under Padmapur block in this district who is suffering from an abnormal hand growth.
Mita was brought to the district hospital here Sunday. After receiving preliminary treatment, she has been shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
Chief district medical officer Dr Chandrika Prasad Dash said that Mita’s treatment expenditure is being met from the district Red Cross fund.
According to reports, when she was 13 years old and a Class VII student, her right hand started growing abnormally, taking the shape of an elephant’s leg. The girl had to quit studies as she could not even walk properly due to the strange situation.
Adding to her woes, both her father and mother passed away, leaving the whole responsibility of the girl on the shoulders of her elder sister Kumari Sabar.
Kumari has been doing odd jobs to take care of Mita. Whatever she earns, it falls short of arranging two square meals, let alone meeting the medical expenses.
Despite all hardships, she had taken Mita to Padmapur Community Health Centre and later to SCB Medical College and Hospital for treatment. But her poor financial condition wasn’t adequate to meet the medical expenses.
Earlier, when she approached the district administration, an assistance of Rs 10, 000 was given.
Mita and her sister hope that the situation would improve following the district administration’s decision to provide good treatment.
