Lathor: The Bolangir district administration Wednesday rescued an ailing and starving widow at Lathor village under Khaprakhol block in Bolangir district.
The administration swung into action after a report of the plight of the woman, Rajpati Verma, was published in the Orissa POST a couple of days back.
Acting on the orders of the District Collector, Khaprakhol BDO along with Lathor sarpanch Prabin Kumar Agarwal, Lathor IIC Satyanand Patra and other officials visited the village and rescued the woman with the help of villagers.
She was then admitted to Patnagarh sub-divisional hospital where her condition is stated to be stable folowing treatment.
According to sources, the widow fell on hard times after her four daughters were married off and her only son also left for Allahabad in search of work.
Left all alone and her health failing, she was even unable to cook or collect food and was virtually starving for days together in her thatched house. She somehow survived on whatever her neighbours provided her. However, her condition had worsened due to the prolonged period without food. Even as the villagers had alerted her children, no one had reached home.
