Minor among four hardcore Maoists lay down arms

Rourkela: Disillusioned by Maoist ideologies, four hardcore Maoists, including a minor, surrendered before the Rourkela police Friday evening.

“As the Red Rebels have deviated from their basic ideology, we decided to lay down our arms and join the mainstream to lead a normal life,’’ the four said while surrendering before Rourkela superintendent of police Umashankar Das.

The cadres belonging to the banned CPI (Maoist) outfit have been identified as Jagan Singh alias Premchand Munda aka Jagdish/Ratan, 23, Matu Bidang alias Tejas, 31, and Sushil Munda alias Maga, 15, and Jan Militia Gaunia Munda alias Guma, 35, of SDS division.

According to police, Jagdish, son of Sartha Singh of Karda under Chandiposh police limits in Sundargarh district joined the Maoist outfit in 2010 at the age of 15. He is involved in several activities including exchange of fire in Boudh, Kandhamal, Angul, Sambalpur, Deogarh and Sundargarh districts.

Fluent in native languages of Odisha and Jharkhand, he was an accomplice of Maoist leader Anmol and was later promoted to the rank of Deputy Commander of SDS Platoon (ACM). He deserted the Maoists organization due to constant threat to his life, ageing parents and frustration with the ideology. He was carrying a reward of Rs 4 lakh on his head.

Matu Buding, son of Late Mangal Buding of Baduiya under Chhotnagra police station in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand joined the Maoists in 2009 as a militia. Initially, he was engaged as a ration carrier and helped Maoists in providing logistics during meetings in their villages. He was arrested in 2010 by Chhotnagra police for his role in a landmine blast in Jamkundi and was in jail custody in Chaibasa. He, however, fled the jail and joined the SDS division. Due to harassment by senior cadres he gave up arms and decided to surrender. He was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh.

Sushil Munda, son of Pandu Munda of Lunga in Sundargarh district, joined the Maoists after being motivated by Anmol. But due to health reasons and harassment from senior cadres he quit the Party.

Gomia Munda, son of Karmu Munda of Kendudihi under Rugudi police limits of Keonjhar district, was a Jan Militia since 2008 and was close to Gunga Munda aka Gunga and Mochhu. He had helped the cadres in providing logistics support, ration and uniforms. When the three Maoists surrendered, he too decided to give in to police.

“The Maoists decided to give up arms as they were fed up with the rebels’ violent activities and their ideologies. They will be rehabilitated as per the policies of the state government,” Rourkela SP Umashankar Das told reporters.
